Pego Ferreiro - Riverside Glamping
Santo Antonio das Areias, 7330-216 , Alentejo, Portugal

An off grid organic smallholding in the Serra de Sao Mamede, Portugal.

The Mill at Pego Ferreiro sits in a valley of the Rio Sever close to the Spanish border in mid Portugal and covers 25 acres. With a kilometre of river bank the site dates back centuries if not millennia.

We have three slightly different types of accommodation for you to regain a sense of balance (you'll need it on the paths). We have tarted up the Goat House, built a glampy kind of lodge overlooking the river and a wooden hide for wild boar watching. Each venue is completely private (you could spend a week here without seeing us or any other guests) and allows space for reflection, deep thought and free beer. (Actually we charge for the beer).

Once our guests arrive the plans of exploration often go out of the window. For those in the Lodge or hide, the river takes up most of their time. People in the Goat House usually find the secret swimming spot just downstream and lose hours there.

Those of you who would like to know more will find the area fascinating for its history, geology, wildlife and culture.

Ancient history abounds in the form of dolmens, antas and the biggest menhir in Europe. Sitting on 180 million year old granite we are blessed with a host of minerals including tungsten and xenotime. Gold apparently flows throughout the river (it's that hot). Iberian lynx are present in the park, a pair of black storks have been visiting us for the last 3 years and we have 4 types of eagle. The massive griffin vultures often soar above. Being so close to the border the art of smuggling has been a tradition passed down the generations. Sadly now mostly a lost art but we did hear of somebody herding a couple of pigs over the border recently. Not sure which way.
